John Doan, 2nd Saturday Community Celtic Concert
Harp Guitar and Multimedia Concert: "A Celtic Pilgrimage with John Doan" Emmy nominee and master harp guitarist John Doan, will perform at the Winona Grange, 8340 SW Seneca St, Tualatin, at 7:30pm on March 10, 2012. Doors 6:45 (tickets at door will be $15 cash or check only), no wheelchair ramp, sorry.
The show "Celtic Pilgrimage," will feature music from John's award winning recording "Eire - Isle of the Saints" (Winner of "Best Celtic Album of the Year") and Wayfarer (also nominated for the same title). John's playing of the 20 string harp guitar takes audiences on a Celtic pilgrimage to the sites made famous by St. Patrick and others during the Golden Age of Ireland. These sites a millennia ago were imaginatively called "Thin Places" where it was believed the space between heaven and earth, and past and future, were thinly divided. The audience is transported back to the very sites where the music was composed enhanced by masterful storytelling and a multi-media presentation.
John Doan traveled to the British Isles where he made these musical sketches that he expresses through his harp guitar. The version of the harp guitar that John plays is a 20-string instrument made in Portland, Oregon with history going back to the nineteenth century in Europe and America. It supplements the standard guitar's six fretted strings with six unfretted sub-bass strings, but its most distinctive sound is the crystalline harp tones of 8 treble strings, which ring with bell-like clarity. John explains, "it has almost the range of the piano but it is a lot easier to carry with you!"
In addition to his solo touring John has toured with Mason Williams and the New Christy Minstrels and most recently with Muriel Anderson. He has also performed with a diverse range of artists from Burl Ives, Donovan, Rickie Lee Jones, and Larry Carlton, and his virtuoso playing and arranging has attracted praise from no less guitar luminaries than Chet Atkins and Doc Watson. He has starred in two much-loved television specials produced by Oregon Public Broadcasting: A Christmas to Remember With John Doan (seen on PBS) and A Victorian Christmas With John Doan, which was nominated for an Emmy. John is an Associate Professor of Music at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon.
