Murder Ballad (10-2)
Originally performed at a bar off-Broadway, immersing the audience in the production, Murder Ballad is a sung-through musical about a love triangle gone horribly wrong. Sara ended her relationship with Tom and married Michael. But after years apart, she meets Tom again and is drawn back into his world. A traditional "murder ballad" is literally a ballad about a murder, and follows the story of that crime from beginning to end. By the end of this murder ballad, one of the characters is dead. But the show will keep you guessing all the way through about who diesand who does it.
Murder Ballad is presented as a "concert" production from Minneapolis Musical Theatre, with the actors staged in front of the band like you'd find at a rock show. The original production earned both an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination for Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical and a Drama League Award nomination for Outstanding Production of a Musical. It was also nominated for five Lucille Lortel awards. The New York Times said, "This steamy show is a love triangle with a razor's edges. The show features taut, tart, and pungent lyrics by Julia Jordan and Juliana Nash," and The New York Post called it a "solid, well-crafted effort that revarnishes the old love-triangle premise. Juliana Nash's muscular-yet-melodic score uses rock better than most musicals."
Murder Ballad features Rebecca Gebhart, Aly Westberg, Daniel Lundin and Christian Unser with musical accompaniment from Tony Sofie, Alex Maiers, Will Roberts and Paul David Stanko.
