How to Write Like I Do with Jen Graves
As a critic, you're both loved and loathed for your expertise in a given subject. What about your expertise as a human being? How much of your personal life goes into your criticism? How much do you admit to not knowing or not being sure about as you re-view what you've seen?
BIO: Jen Graves has been a newspaper arts critic for 15 years, the past 6 at The Stranger. In a personality test once, given a series of four words, the one that applied most to her was "assertive," and the one that applied least was "confident." We'll talk and learn about the kamikaze ride of critical writing. In addition to The Stranger, Jen Graves occasionally writes for magazines she likes to read, including The Believer, Art in America, and Modern Painters, and she has taught contemporary art history at Cornish College of the Arts. She once was a very good synchronized swimmer.
