Sara ZALEK Sundays 2-4PM Jan. 15-Feb. 19 (6-weeks)
GATHERING RITUALS: Emerging from the cold dark stillness, we invoke forgotten and exhiled body memories to wake and to explore butoh techniques, somatic therapy, moving meditations, and creative movement through guided improvisations. Writing and drawing exercises integrate conceptual frameworks to open and release the mind/body in tandem. Each class will explore concepts of fragility, virility, dynamic shifts, and permeating a space with life-force (ma). There will be emphasis on dancing the dark to create transformative rituals for the self and for the collective.
Sara Zalek, www.saratonin.com Sara has studied various moving and mediation practices for over 20 years, and has trained and performed with many butoh masters over the last seven years. She brings to the work her endless enthusiasm and compassion for new beginnings, and a desire to share in the expansion of the inner world, inviting it to play with the body. A graduate from SAIC in 2006, Sara has performed in Chicago and beyond, and bases her work on her dreams, drawings, and writings of her most secret self.
Adam ROSE, Antibody Corporation Sundays 2-4PM Feb. 26- April 1 (6-weeks)
AGAINST THE BODY: This six-week workshop provides techniques and context for a possible post-butoh practice. Beginning with the four animal forms of Darkside Dance, the participants are guided through various stages of darkness to arrive at the choreographed world of Universe B.
Week 1: DARKSIDE DANCE. The body as a medium of sorcery. The four foundational darkside forms: Snake (Sex), Spider (Death), Frog (Desire), and Monkey (Fear).
Week 2: THEORY OF THE CLOWN. Mimicry as a form of aggressive action. The Circle. The Mouth. Crazy lines. Parody, formal chaos, and laughter.
Week 3: BEWARE THE WORD. The dancer's vow of silence. Choronzon and the babbling Ego. Sensation and the problem of Good vs. Evil.
Week 4: OATH OF THE CYBORG. Practical steps towards an embodied antihumanism. Dance as the creation of a virtual body in a virtual world. Cobwebs in the sky: immateriality, spirituality, and horror.
Week 5: SORCERY AND REVOLUTION. Speaking lies to power. Walking the Other way. Business-as-Usual. Becoming-Enemy. Isolation.
Week 6: UNIVERSE B. Choreography and the illusion of a unified World. Theater as the opposite of Life. Vampirism, Nomadism, and Anti-Civilization.
