East West -
Not Man Apart Presents East/West By SpectorDance

Saturday, September 19, 8pm
Sunday, September 20, 2pm

@ Diavolo Studio
616 Moulton Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90031

East/West is a collaborative 60-minute, live, multidisciplinary performance, exploring in movement the geography of gang violence; a metaphor for the madness on our streets around arbitrary territorial divisions. Under the direction of Fran Spector-Atkins, artists combine their choreography with 18 filmed interviews with a variety of individuals including at-risk young adults, ranking ex-gang members, prisoners, pastors, and victims of crime, which were then used in video projection created by William Roden and original "sound/environments" and rap scores by NYC-based rap artist, Baba Brinkman, for aggressive, pulsating, and hard-edged music.

L.A. based performers, Jones Welsh, Anne-Marie Talmadge, Phillip Wainwright, and Colton PiersonGeiger bring their creative and dynamic movement to tell this "kinetic story"and offer an extraordinary physical presence.

East/West strives to give voice to an often marginalized population, bringing their experiences and concerns to the stage with integrity, force, and meaning.  East/West puts the arts at the center of a conversation about this complex issue of gang violence and it's relationship to systemic poverty.  Participants will experience how these difficult topics can be expressed and explored through art and will find the inspiration and motivation to change their lives and even influence a larger community change.

Over the last three years, there have been almost 17,000 verified violent gang crimes in the city of Los Angeles alone; there are more than 450 active gangs with a combined membership of over 45,000 on the streets and in prison.  Los Angeles County is known by the FBI as the Gang Capital of the entire world.  There is no better time to address this widespread problem that many cities across the U.S. are grappling with, and to be part of the solution.
