August Wilson's "The Piano Lesson"
In "The Piano Lesson" August Wilson's second Pulitzer Prize-winner and his most haunting and dramatic work, Wilson has fashioned an ebullient and heart-stopping play whose real music is in the language.
At the heart of the play stands the ornately carved upright piano which, as the Charles Family's, hard-won possession has been gathering dust in the parlor of Bernice Charles's Pittsburgh home. When Boy Willie, Bernice's exuberant brother, bursts into her life with his dream of buying the same Mississippi land that his family had worked on as slaves, he plans to sell their antique piano for the hard cash he needs to stake his future. But Bernice refuses to sell, clinging to the piano as a reminder of the history that is their family legacy. The dilemma is the real "Piano Lesson," reminding us that black people are often deprived of the symbols of the past and of opportunity in the present.
Winner of the 1990 New York Drama Critic's Circle Award for best new play.
