International Writers: Nuruddin Farah & Maaza Mengiste
Internationally acclaimed author Nuruddin Farah (pictured at left) - called "the most important African novelist to emerge in the past twenty-five years" (The New York Review of Books)has charted the troubled history of his native Somalia over the course of eleven previous novels, including the masterful trilogies Maps, Gifts, Secrets and Knots, Links, Crossbones. His most recent work, Hiding in Plain Sight, out now in paperback, is something of a departure - a modern tale of African sexuality and personal freedom that shuttles between the fast-paced worlds of Rome and Nairobi.
Maaza Mengiste (pictured at right), who was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, is author of the highly-praised novel, Beneath the Lion's Gaze, a gripping story of a family - and country - coming apart on the eve of revolution in 1974 Ethiopia. Named one of the 10 best contemporary African books by The Guardian, Beneath the Lion's Gaze is a transcendent and powerful debut, "rich in compassion for its anguished characters" (The New York Times Book Review).
