Masterworks of American Painting -- Part 2 -- Felicia Brown
Do you, like many Americans, tend to overlook the achievements of our native artists in favor of the Great Masters of Europe? Would you like to learn what makes a work of art "American"? And how do this country's greatest paintings depict its rich history?
Join Felicia Brown in an inspiring three-part trip through the exciting years of American painting, from the first hesitant explorers to the unrivaled geniuses of the early 20th century: from the colonial period to about 1910.
The four classes in this second session will expose us to Thomas Cole in his late period and his legacy to the next generation of painters, to genre painting, to the painting of the frontier and Native Americans, to the Civil War in art and the "glow of peace," to art as the mirror for social change, and finally to the Classical Revival Period.
Throughout this DVD course an eminent professor, art historian, scholar and lecturer will highlight intriguing details of the times and experiences of each artist, analyze representative works and point out those characteristics which make them noteworthy. His deep passion for the subject will leave you enthralled. Following each DVD lecture, author and art lover Felicia Brown will lead a class discussion about what you have just seen.
LLCC will offer three courses covering American painting over the next few months. This is the second of those three courses. This course has four class sessions. Each class session will include two half-hour DVD lectures, supplemental contributions by your presenter, and time for your questions and discussion.
Felicia Brown spent a third of her working years teaching French language and literature, and the rest running an investigations unit for the Superior Court in San Jose. At retirement, she dived back into her first love: the fascinating (but impractical) field of art appreciation. She has previously facilitated two art courses: a visit to the NY Metropolitan Museum of Art, and a visit to the Louvre in Paris.
Registering for this course by buying a ticket will admit you to all 4 sessions of this course.
