Thank you,
Summit Planning Committee
We are pleased to announce that the Washington State Coalition for Language Access (WASCLA) will hold its 10th Language Access Summit on Friday and Saturday, October 16 and 17, 2015, in Ellensburg, Washington, at the Kittitas Valley Event Center, located at 901 E. 7th Ellensburg, WA 98926.
Our conference is for those working in every service sector, including but not limited to education, healthcare, legal, human services, and public safety and for everyone who supports WASCLA's goal of eliminating language barriers to essential services for Limited English Proficient and Deaf individuals in Washington State. We welcome interpreters, translators, attorneys, judges, policy makers, elected officials, educators, public and private sector service providers, law enforcement personnel, advocates, students and community members to join us for two days of sharing knowledge and resources, and planning next steps to achieve the goal to "Let Everyone Participate."
This year's theme, "A Decade of WASCLA: Progress and Promise," highlights a very special milestone for our organization, our 10th anniversary. In 2005, WASCLA held the first Language Access Summit in Ellensburg and we are returning there to commemorate a decade of advocacy efforts to eliminate language barriers in Washington. Summit X will provide an opportunity to reflect on our collective successes over the years and to lay the groundwork for addressing the challenges that remain in ensuring language access for all.
Sessions at the Summit are intended to be multi-disciplinary with the aim that we can all learn from work being done in other fields and from varying perspectives. Topics at this year's Summit will include:
FRIDAY SESSIONS:
WASCLA Retrospective: our original conveners reflect on the organization's impact and consider the work ahead.
Language Access in Washington State Government
Washington Interpreter Certification Update
Law Enforcement & Community Engagement
Collaborating with Interpreters in Sensitive Life Situations: Family Conferences and End of Life Care
Access for All in Emergency Preparedness and Response
SATURDAY SESSIONS:
The Role of Technology in Language Services: Help or Hype?
Language Access as a Social Justice Imperative
Compassion Fatigue: Caring for Self while Caring for Others
Ethics: Objections & Waivers- Implications for Litigants, Interpreters, and Attorneys
Emergency Response Part 2: Washington Stakeholder's Forum
and more!
WASCLA will also hold its Annual Meeting at the Summit.
