yidArts 2012 | Michael Winograd Trio
Yiddishkayt is thrilled to launch the 2012 YidArts season with The Michael Winograd Trio at the brand-new West Hollywood Library on January 21st.
The Michael Winograd Klezmer Trio features three of the top, young musicians playing Klezmer music in New York today: Clarinetist Michael Winograd, accordionist/composer Patrick Farrell, and singer, bassist, and composer Benjy Fox-Rosen. Blending traditional Yiddish songs and new Klezmer compositions with chamber-like improvisations and spontaneous arrangements, this ensemble creates spectacular performances throughout the United States.
Clarinetist Michael Winograd has recorded and performed with SoCalled, Budowitz, Frank London, and the Klezmer Conservatory Band. He has led workshops and performed near and far, with highlighted performances in Reunion Island, the Dawson City Music Festival (Yukon), the Winnepeg and Calgary Folk Festivals, Klezmore Festival (Vienna) and Carnegie Hall in New York City. He has taught Klezmer music at the Paris Klezmer week, KlezKanada, and Living Traditions KlezKamp. In his spare time he produces records, composes music and plays synthesizer in the Brooklyn based metal band Yiddish Princess.
Accordionist/composer Patrick Farrell, specializes in new-music, free-jazz, cabaret, theater, klezmer and various other forms of East-European folk music. He leads his own group, Stagger Back Brass Band, as well as playing with Ljova and the Kontraband, Frank London's Klezmer Brass All-Stars, Veveritse Brass Band, Romashka and in multiple other groups and odd situations around New York City.
Benjy Fox-Rosen is a singer, bassist and composer creating new Yiddish music. Ranging from re-imaginings of Yiddish art songs, to original settings of the poetry of Krakow's Mordechai Gebirtig, his compositions create a "vivifying concert of old lyrics in newbottles." (Zachary Berger of The Forward) Fox-Rosen recently released "Tick Tock" (2011) to critical praise. His following recording, analbum of original settings of the poetry of Gebirtig, will be releasedon John Zorn's Tzadik Records in 2012. Fox-Rosen has toured extensively in Central and Eastern Europe, and has taught at the Krakow Jewish Culture Festival, and the Vilnius Yiddish Institute.
