I'm very pleased that we were able to bring Melissa Manchester to Boise. She is the real deal, and this is a night you won't want to miss." Lynda Johnson at the Riverside Hotel, said, "Melissa Manchester has spent a lifetime creating amazing music. It will be such a pleasure to see her up close in The Sapphire Room, which was built to honor musicians and their artistry. We're thrilled that she is coming to Boise, and I know she is in for a very warm welcome from our local community of music lovers." Ms. Manchester has had a long and illustrious career. She was born in New York where her parents introduced her to all the classics, and by the age of 15, Melissa was already a published poet. Here first professional job was as a staff writer at Chappell Music and she also performed as a solo singer/pianist in the clubs of Greenwich Village. She met Bette Midler and Barry Manilow and started singing back-up for Bette, and was able to fulfil her childhood fantasy of playing Carnegie Hall. Six months later, she had a recording contract, and went on to headline at Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall, and performed for sold-out audiences across the country. Melissa is a compelling singer/songwriter. Her debut releases "Home To Myself" and "Bright Eyes" helped launch the smash hit single "Midnight Blue." Her songs have been recorded by Barbra Streisand, Dusty Springfield, Alison Krauss, Roberta Flack, Johnny Mathis and Peabo Bryson among many others. Her international hits "Through The Eyes Of Love" and "Don't Cry Out Loud" were written for her by her friends and frequent collaborators Carole Bayer Sager, Marvin Hamlisch and the late Peter Allen.
In 1980 she performed both of her Oscar-nominated songs "Through The Eyes Of Love" and "The Promise" at the Academy Awards. Melissa received the Grammy Award in 1982 for Best Female Vocalist. She has also appeared in numerous theatrical productions and movies in recent years. For example, nine of her songs were highlighted in the feature film "Dirty Girl," starring Mary Steenburgen. Melissa received the Governor's Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for her contributions to the music and recording arts, and her body of work to date as a singer/songwriter was a featured exhibit at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum in New London, Connecticut.
