SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW: RECALLING THE SONGS AND LIFE OF JUDY GARLAND -- JOHN FREY
Judy Garland amassed a body of work astounding in its range, amazing in its power, and timeless in its ability to exult, enthrall, and excite cross-generational audiences. In each medium, her legacy encompassed unsurpassed artistic and popular successes.  In American musical history, only a very few entertainers like Judy Garland have flourished, maintaining their artistic reputations and garnering additional critical and popular respect. The enthusiasm for her continues to grow, as does acknowledgment of her importance, her influence, and her singular ability to communicate with an audience.

In this four session course we will try to capture that enthusiasm by viewing four films by and about her and then talking about these films together in a class.

In the first session we will screen one of Judy Garland's great films from her teens - The Wizard of Oz; the third session will feature a film which earned her an Oscar nomination - A Star is Born.  At the second session you  will enjoy a stunning docudrama - Life with Garland, starring Judy Davis, who portrays Garland brilliantly.  At the last session you will watch Judy in her prime in Judy Garland - The Concert Years.

Following each film your instructor John Frey will lead a discussion about what you have just seen
.
This course is your front-row ticket to rediscover and celebrate the luminous talents of Judy Garland, and entertainer for the ages.  Grab some popcorn and take your seat.

John Frey taught chemistry and engaged in chemical research for 40 years and is now retired.  He has served on various boards including OperaSLO, LLCC, Opera Lovers Meet, Cuesta Master Chorale and Festival Mozaic. He participated in numerous musical events as a member of several choral groups and in 12 productions of Pacific Repertory Opera and OperaSLO. He organized and offered numerous courses on opera and musical theater.
