UNDERSTANDING INTER-GENERATIONAL COMMUNICATION
Communication mishaps between generations tend to inspire a lot of eye rolling from both sides. Among family and friends, that might mean enduring good-natured taunts about how frequently a Millennial references Internet culture, or about a Baby Boomer's lack of technological prowess. The impact of your words may depend on how well you understand the generation of the person who reads or hears them. Grandmother-speak is different from grandson-speak, and different still from the lingo of the generation in between. This course will help you to be able to tailor your communication to the vocabularies, values, and media preferences of others. This ability can help you connect better with those you care about and may depend on. Rudy Xavier, your instructor, will provide you with a CD containing up-to-date generational research findings, clues for decoding generation-bound speech, and a valuable lingo manual listing the 600 most common texting and chat-room acronyms. We hope that what you take away from this course will help you improve your communication with, and understanding of family and friends both older and younger than yourselves. As a fun bonus, you will have the opportunity -- if desired -- to role play as someone of an age other than your current age. This is an engaging, participatory, fun, and useful class for anyone wishing to hone their cross-generational communication skills Rudy enjoyed a satisfying career at DEC, Honeywell & Xerox Corp., targeting scientific & medical software. A determined student of design genius R. Buckminster Fuller & generational marketing pioneer Ann A. Fishman, Rudy is also trained in psychology, computational linguistics, & data visualization. In this course, he will draw you a communications "map," to help you communicate effectively with all who are important to you. Wednesday, October 14, 2015, 10am-12noon KCBX in SLO
