GOLDEN CHILD - synopsis
Andrew is expecting a new child. Uncertain about his ability to be a father he is visited by the spirit of his mother who allows him to relive the experiences of his grandfather; Tieng-Bin, a businessman returning home to China in 1918 after spending three years in the Philippines. He greets his daughter, three wives, and their traditional Confucian home with a new found interest in modern "Occidental" culture. But much to his wives' dismay, he has also invited a Christian missionary into their home, whose lessons may allow him to abandon his obligations and follow his heart to re-marry his one true love, his "third wife," as his ONLY wife. Through these stories of his ancestors, Andrew will learn the price of progress, and find that sometimes sacrifice brings hope for the future. Written by the Tony Award Winning playwright of M. BUTTERFLY, YELLOWFACE and Broadway's CHINGLISH, GOLDEN CHILD examines the politics of cultural conversion at the dawn of an inter-cultural world. -------------------------------------------
