At the heart of the little southern Italian town of Taormina, on the top of a hill overlooking the Mediterranean is a beautiful Greek theatre built in the 7th century BC. Every summer, since 1983, it comes to life with an intense programme of theatre, dance, cinema and music, including the masterpieces of opera. The remarkable Greek theatre is the site of this powerful production of Puccini's Tosca. The role of Tosca seems made for the celebrated, Vienna-born soprano Martina Serafin. Her fiery passion is matched by Marcello Giordani's standout performance as Vittoria and the great baritone Renato Bruson's extraordinary Scarpia, crushed between relentless passion for Tosca and the demands of political duty. Serafin and Bruson achieve moments of unforgettable tension. Enrico Castiglione has directed the work with tremendous originality and dramatic power, heightening a traditional setting with a modern and cinematic style. Eugene Kohn conducts. This powerful Tosca is an operatic event played out against the backdrop of Sicily's remarkable, 7th century BC Greek theatre
