Traditional Irish Music and Step Dance Workshops & Concert with Laurel Martin, Mark Roberts & Kieran Jordan
Laurel Martin (fiddle), Mark Roberts (flute, banjo, bouzouki), and Kieran Jordan (sean-nós / "old style" step dance) perform traditional Irish music and dance with the sweetest of melodies and heartiest of grooves. As long-time friends through music, these three artists have collaborated previously in other groups, and they have toured and performed together as part of the fiddle ensemble, Childsplay. As a trio, they present tasteful musical selections, with dance woven in as rhythmic and visual accompaniment. Performing with lyricism and consummate skill, this group also sprinkles their concerts with entertaining and heart-felt anecdotes, promising an uplifting show of good tunes, good steps, and good spirits.

Irish Sean-nós Dance Workshop
with Kieran Jordan

Sean-nós means "old-style" in the Irish language. As a solo, improvised form of dance, the sean-nós style is as varied and unique as every dancer who dances it. A sean-nós dance performance is often informal, playful, and expressive, allowing the dancer to engage in a here-and-now dialogue with the music. Distinct from more modern forms of Irish step dancing, sean-nós dancing feature short rhythmic patterns, subtle movements with footwork kept close-to-the-floor, and a loose, relaxed upper body. Beginner students will learn the basic movements and rhythms that progress into popular steps found in Connemara sean-nós dancing. Tap dancers or students with other percussive dance experience will explore the specific style and rhythmic phrasing of sean-nós dance, in relation to live Irish music.

Open to dancers ages 11 through adult. Please wear shoes with a smooth hard sole (tap shoes or Irish step dance shoes are also good options).
