Joshua Roman, the 23-year-old principal cellist of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, has joined Town Hall as artistic director of TownMusic, Town Hall's exploratory classical music series. Dubbed a "classical music rock star" by KUOW, Romans interests extend into the baroque, classical, jazz and rock repertoires; in a head crowded with many musical voices, he finds his own as a performer and a programmer through confidence, passion, and technique. Reflecting his view that "excellence is where you hear it," his debut season is a highly personal expression of his many influences; it's a season of music he loves.
Wednesday, October 17 at 7:30 pm 'Solo' The season begins with a program of solo performances designed to explore the capabilities and characteristics of many instruments. Roman will be joined for an evening of tour de force solo performances by double bassist Joe Kaufman, percussionist Alexander Lipowski (Corpus by Vinko Glokobar), clarinetist Laura deLuca, pianist Byron Schenkman (Scarlatti), and violist Mara Gearman (Sonata op. 25 no. 1 by Hindemith.)
Monday, November 19 at 7:30 pm TownMusic: Oberlin Baroque Trio TownMusic's season continues with an evening featuring the Oberlin Baroque Trio: viola de gambist Catharina Meints, harpsichordist Webb Wiggins and violinist Marilyn McDonald, performing "The Three Bs of Baroque." Works on the program include two Trio Sonatas by Dietrich Buxtehude, gamba and violin sonatas by J.S. Bach, and Heinrich Bibers Passacaglia for Unaccompanied Violin.
Thursday, January 10 at 7:30 pm 'Quartet' This genre-spanning program features three innovative 20th century works reflecting the widest possible range of musical influences. Beginning with the Quartet for the End of Time by French composer Olivier Messiaen (written and first performed while imprisoned in a German prison camp) the groundbreaking work is a musical extension of the Biblical account of the end of time. Featuring the same instrumentation as the Messiaen (clarinet, violin, cello, and piano), Dan Visconti's Fractured Jams combines the thrill, confusion and driving power of rock with the carefully-crafted lyricism of Tin Pan Alley. In the second half of the program, Joshua Roman, cello, clarinetist Bill Kalinkos, pianist Grace Fong, and violinist Amy Iwazumi, are joined by vocalist Sarah Rudinoff and multi-instrumentalist John Osebold in a performance of works by the experimental rock band Radiohead.
Sunday, April 27 Recital at 5 pm, Concert at 7 pm The Chinese Muse The Seattle Chamber Players are Seattle's premier contemporary chamber music ensemble. They are joined by pianist Tomoko Mukaiyama in an evening of music featuring Dutch composer Louis Andriessen, a recently finished chamber version of Gustav Mahler's Das Abschied and Das Lied von der Erde, and a work by the Silk Road Project's Zhou Long. The evening begins with a pre-concert recital by Seattle Chamber Players with pianist Cristina Valdes performing works by young As
