"The more I met Alexander Crummell, the more I felt how much that world was losing which knew so little of him."  W.E.B. Du Bois, The Souls of Black Folk

Rev. Alexander Crummell (March 3, 1819 - September 10, 1898) was a leading abolitionist, Pan-African nationalist and champion for Black Lives in his time.

Please join us for a simple celebration of this great man, and of the Alexander Crummell School, a historic landmark and his only known memorial.

Dr. Greg Carr, Chair of the African American Studies Department at Howard University, will speak to the present day relevance of Crummell, and his relationship to the ongoing struggle for Black Lives.  An excerpt from Crummell's work "The Race Problem in America" published in 1889 will be presented by actor Ronald Smokey Stevens.

In addition, Crummell School alumni and Ivy City residents will present a vision for the future of the Alexander Crummell School, to again serve the community as it did when open from 1911 through 1972, as a fitting tribute to this great American leader, teacher, and pastor.

Seating is limited.  Please RSVP using the "register" button below.  Event is free, but please donate to Empower DC to support our work in Ivy City.

Contact friendsofcrummellschool@gmail.com or call Parisa Norouzi at Empower DC, (202) 234-9119 x 100 for more information.
