This concert showcases choral works by John Rutter, the beloved British composer, who celebrates his 70th birthday in 2015. Rutter's choral music is filled with lyrical melodies of exquisite beauty, coupled with harmonies that are at once sublime and satisfying. The works on this program range in style from the stunning brilliance of "A Choral Fanfare" and "O Clap Your Hands" to the intriguing and entrancing sounds of "Musica Dei Donum" (for chorus and solo flute).
The featured work, Rutter's rarely-heard "Mass of the Children," will be a collaboration between the Heritage Chorale and VOICES Boston, the superb children's chorus that frequently performs with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Also joining the Heritage Chorale for "Mass of the Children" are soprano soloist Jean Danton, baritone soloist Garrett Murphy, and a richly varied instrumental ensemble including flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, string bass, organ, harp, and a dazzling array of percussion instruments.
