Joseph Lelyveld: The Human Side of Mahatma Gandhi
Reconsidering Gandhi's extraordinary struggles, Joseph Lelyveld (Great Soul) deepens our sense of his achievements-and disappointments. Lelyveld, once a New York Times correspondent in India and later the newspaper's executive editor, chronicles Gandhi's sense of mission, social values, and philosophy of nonviolent resistance; the heroic and tragic last months of his long campaign; and his ever-evolving legacy. As a result, Gandhi emerges as one of history's most remarkable self-creations, who more than six decades after his death still ensures his place as India's social conscience and not just India's.
