Northport-based filmmaker and Cinema Arts Centre promoter Alexia Anastasio had a dream to bring attention to the world of independently-made art. After three years of labor, she poured her resources into a documentary subject worthy of representing that spirit-- two-time Academy Award-nominee, artist and animator Bill Plympton. Plympton is world-renowned for his cartoon shorts and feature films, including Idiots & Angels, Guard Dog, Mutant Aliens and I Married A Strange Person and his work on MTV, in a career that spans three decades.
The result is the documentary is "Adventures In Plymptoons!," having it's Long Island premiere at Cinema Arts Centre, where it all began for Anastasio, her love of movies stemming from coming to the Cinema Arts as a child.
The film includes interviews with family, friends, colleagues, critics, and fans ranging from Terry Gilliam to "Weird Al" Yankovic (who Plympton did two of Al's music videos) to Keith Carradine (an Academy Award winner for Robert Altman's Nashville) who performs the song, "I'll Be Your Soldier" in the film.
Film Threat stated, "Anastasio's film operates as a sort of career retrospective for Plympton. Plympton, by all accounts, is a pretty big deal in the world of independent animation. It's especially apt for a guy who's maintained a fierce independence from the studios." Variety described the film as "very much in the style of his own gleefully impudent work."
This follows Plympton's progress from rainy days in his Portland childhood drawing indoors to a self-made career as an independent animator. Join us for a night sure to inspire the creativity in all of us!
