Q&A

Question: Is beekeeping legal in the City of Norfolk?
Answer: On October 11, 2011 the City Council of Norfolk removed any references to the keeping of honey bees in the city's nuisance ordinance. A correspondence from Frank Duke, Planning Director for the City of Norfolk, stated "There are no restrictions in City ordinance dealing with bee keeping".

Question: Is beekeeping legal in the City of Virginia Beach?
Answer: It depends on how the property is zoned where you intend to keep the bees. Visit http://www.municode.com/library/VA/Virginia_Beach and type in "bees". That will tell you what the city allows based on the zoning of the property in question. Virginia Beach is very liberal toward keeping bees. If the property is goverened by a Home Owners Association, you will need to check with them too.
