Dr. Lehnhof-Free Speaker Series: Shakespeare's Twins
Fee Speaker Series: Shakespeare's Twins Abstract: In this presentation, Dr. Lehnhof will draw on his ongoing research of twinship in the Renaissance to talk about Shakespeare's use of twins. Shakespeare left us with two twin plays--The Comedy of Errors and Twelfth Night--which already marks him as unique. (The only other English playwright to attempt a play about twins was John Webster, in the Duchess of Malfi.) Over the course of his talk, Dr. Lehnhof will show that Shakespeare's use of twins is not only idiosyncratic but also intellectually and philosophically rich. In these two plays, Shakespeare uses twinship to explore a wide range of fascinating questions about identity and individuality, difference and sameness, empathy and otherness, and birth order and inheritance.
