The Clarinet Program/ Left Coast Chamber Ensemble
The Left Coast Chamber Ensemble's The Clarinet Program presents four diverse compositions featuring performances by clarinetists Jerome Simas and Jeffrey Anderle. In addition to the Brahms Clarinet Sonata, the program includes Stephen Hartke's Horse with the Lavender Eye, Sean Friar's Velvet Hammer, and a clarinet trio by Left Coast's pianist and composer Eric Zivian. In Hartke's surreal trio for violin, clarinet, and piano, the composer explores the idea of being off-balance and toys with "the way that sense can suddenly appear out of nonsense." Friar's Velvet Hammer, which was a 2011 Gaudeamus Prize nominee, juxtaposes pretty, smooth, lyrical textures with the loud, raucous, and ridiculous to create a "haunting whirlwind" (WQXR New York). Completing the program is Zivian's poignant trio for clarinet, cello, and piano. At once intricate and spare, this work sets rhapsodic cello and clarinet melodies against the piano's ingenious counterpoint.
