Join 18 Reasons for four-part course on home brewing beer. With some of the Bay Area's best brewers at the helm, this series will teach home brewers how to take their beer to the next level. Each class will be devoted to one topic, giving us plenty of time to geek out, go deep, and drink amply. During the course, everyone will be making their own beer to share and critique at the end.
March 26th:Introduction to All-Grain Brewing with Patrick Horn and Bryan Hermannsson of Pacific Brewing Laboratory. We will brew a three gallon batch of beer on the kind of simple homebrew set-up that many homebrewers start out with, including a cooler mash tun, a copper wort chiller, and a siphon hose. While we brew we'll provide an introduction to brewing appropriate for folks who haven't brewed all-grain beer before as well as those with a bit more experience. Note this class may run a bit over three hours.
April 9th: Learn all about the wonders of yeast with Mike White from WhiteLabs and Jesse Friedman from Almanac Beer Company! We will provide a review of different yeasts and styles, what they do to beer, and how and why they work their magic. We will also offer information for how to culture your own yeast.
April 23rd: Sensory Evaluation with Nicole Erny, Master Cicerone. We will taste beers with "off flavors" to get acquainted with the most common. We will help each other identify off-flavors and their potential causes and solutions. With our fine-tuned palates, we will then sip a few participants' own beers.
May 7th: Refine Your Beer - (Nathan Smith of the Brewing Network, additional panel members TBD). Bring in your homebrew that you want to improve, whether it's to eliminate a flaw or just refine your recipe to achieve a particular characteristic like a fuller body or bringing different elements into balance. Together we'll taste a few participants' beers and an experienced panel of homebrewers will give their feedback and tips.
