Mission Hills Heritage Annual Historic Home Tour
Mission Hills Heritage is celebrating its eleventh Annual Home Tour by honoring the Prairie Style. The first uniquely American architectural style, the Prairie Style was pioneered by Frank Lloyd Wright in Chicago, from which it made its way across the country to San Diego during the 1910s and 1920s. Master builders including Nathan Rigdon, Martin Melhorn, Alexander Schreiber, and Morris B. Irvin were major contributors to the Prairie Style homes in Mission Hills. An excellent example of the elements of the Prairie Style can be found in the Robie House located in Chicago and built by Wright in 1909.
Prairie Style homes feature oversized eaves in connection with a low-pitched roof, and are characterized by strong, horizontal lines meant to simulate and celebrate the prairie landscape of the Midwest. The home tour has a strong showing of Prairie Style homes that capture the essence of this innovative and exciting design. While each home shares many of the same characteristics of the Prairie Style, they also contain their own unique flavor and interesting design elements. Some homes on the tour have remodeled interior details to serve modern family living. Great care was given during the remodeling stages so that the integrity of the home was preserved and the natural flow of the home is complementary to the original style.
The tour is scheduled for Saturday, September 26 and will begin at 11 am and conclude at 4 pm. Docents will lead our guests through the interiors of the homes and share intriguing facts associated with that particular home. The tour is self-paced and situated such that it allows you to walk to each designated home, or to drive if you wish.
As an additional feature to the tour, there will be a special viewing of the 1921 United Church of Christ at 4070 Jackdaw Street, a highly substantial historic landmark in Mission Hills, that will also double as the Will Call and Ticket Tables site, on the corner of Jackdaw and Lewis Streets. As the tradition continues, refreshments will be served in the hall of the United Church of Christ.
