The Kreutzer Sonata: Beethoven, the Tolstoys & Posterity: A Music-Theater Piece Music by Beethoven, Mozart, Mendelssohn and Ernst
Ivan Rosenblum, artistic director, piano, and writer Shannon Delaney, violin; Julie James, actor Stephen Muterspaugh, actor
If alive today, how Beethoven would view his universal acclaim is unknowable, but he'd probably be astonished to learn that his "Kreutzer Sonata" has become the pre-eminent, iconic violin-piano sonata, and also the inspiration for numerous short stories, plays, films, paintings and even a perfume ad. It has taken on a life of its own.
Our music-theater piece probes these developments with a performance of the virtuosic masterpiece intertwined with dramatic asides of its history and far-reaching influence. Both a performance (with music by Beethoven, Mozart, Mendelssohn and Ernst) and a theatrical tale, this concert explores why "The Kreutzer Sonata" is a misnomer and how it inspired opposing accounts of a troubled marriage in Leo and Sophia Tolstoy's dueling novellas.
Our one-of-a-kind performance appeals equally to both chamber music and theater lovers. You'll see and hear why!
