2015 Tour de Farm
Join us for an amazing weekend of bicycles, farms, great people and delicious food. Community Farmers Markets 2015 Tour de Farm will ride 38 miles, taking breaks at four idyllic stops (with lunch included) on the first day before dinner by the Wrecking Bar and camping out together that evening. The next morning we'll wake up to breakfast and ride 11 miles back to where we began.
Tour de Farm is a fully supported ride. You bring all of your own camping gear, we will transport it for you, have bicycle techs on hand and support riders with us the whole way. And, we'll have plenty of snacks!
Tour de Farm starts and ends at Decimal Place Farm in Conley, GA. Mary Rigdon has been on the historic 40 acres of farmland in Conley since October 1995 where she raises American Saanen goats and produces cheeses. Also at Decimal Place Farm is Mary Yetter's vegetable farm plot. Mary is one of the Friends from Scharko Farms & Friends you see at the East Atlanta Village Farmers every week. After a career in international women's health she's now focused on farming at home. She was a founder of the first community garden in an Atlanta city park (Brownwood Park in EAV).
From Decimal Place Farm we head east and meet up with the PATH on the South River Trail and head toward Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve. Robby Astove, a.k.a Ranger Robby, a.k.a. Robby Appleseed, will lead a foraging walk around this 2,600 acre preserve in Dekalb County, which will likely include spotting late muscadines and/or early native persimmons. Here we will eat lunch with local goodies prepared by our friends at the Candler Park Market deli.
It's further east to Grant Wallace's Farm south of Conyers. Grant Wallace is an up and coming young farmer raising vegetables, chickens and pigs. He has honed in designs for low cost DYI hoop houses and has a knack for how to make a lot with a little. This is his first year selling at the Grant Park Farmers Market, and he recently picked up the Google Headquarters in Atlanta as a customer for his vegetables.
Our last stop of the day will be south in Stockbridge at Mayflor Farm. Chris Edwards is another up and coming young farmer that manages Mayflor Farm primarily raising vegetables alongside some bees, cows, chickens and fruit trees. This is also his first season as weekly vendor at the Grant Park Farmers Market. In 2011, Chris traveled to Ghana for nine month to study ethnobotany and traditional medicine.
Dinner at Mayflor Farm will be prepared by the wonderful folks of the Wrecking Bar and will feature smoked chicken and pork with plenty of veggie sides: salad, roasted veggies, corn bread, vegetarian baked beans. We'll have pie for dessert and a keg of hefeweizen to celebrate with. We'll have a bonfire. play some music and have some drinks before we go to sleep. Chef Philip Meeker will make us breakfast the next morning and we'll head back to our vehicles at Decimal Place Farm.
You must register for this event in advance. Check-in the day of the event is at 7:15am. All-inclusive registration is $100 per person.
