Home Brewed Beer Demystified with Scarlet Barn Brewery
We have seen them before: the home brew kits you receive on your birthday/anniversary/Father's and Mother's Day. The instructions look daunting and the fear of failure high. Would you like to have someone walk you through the process?
Meet Theo Walker, founder and Chief Brewing Officer at Scarlet Barn Brewery on October 4th. His 23 years of home brewing first began as a hobby, grew to an obsession and now is essential in his life and personal philosophy. He will instruct you on the following:
+ Types and varieties of beer - the nuts and bolts of what builds individual characteristics through ingredients;
+ Procedures and protocols - the process from start to finish of brewing from sanitizing and planning to fermentation and bottling;
+ Application of lesson - where we take the discussion into the lab. You will make beer!
You'll receive 4 hours of instruction, including a brewing experience of a collective five gallon batch of beer (an Ale type, partial-mash brew). Each participant will take home a 6 pack of finished brew*! Also included: instructions, follow-up brochure and recipes. In addition to this experience, you will sample some of what is brewing over at the Barn and appetizers.
This event is for persons 21 and over.
*Finished brew will take three weeks to ferment and mature prior to being able to enjoy for drinking. Size may vary between six(6) 12 oz bottles to four(4) 22oz bottles. Instructor: Theo Walker is a second generation Californian. In addition to brewing beer and other potent potables, he is a published poet and author, stage performer and raconteur, as well as a devoted foodie who loves to eat as much as he loves to cook. Through his studies in occult sciences and mysticism over three decades, he's developed a philosophy of awakening human potential through practical applications of the alchemical arts of brewing.
The passion of transformation came into his life pretty much by accident. An interest in fermentation began with a glass of grape juice left to ferment with the wild yeasts in grade school. Over the years and discovering the process, he was gifted with a wine making kit which also doubled as a beer brewing kit. The first batch was not pleasant, yet he was undeterred and studied some more. Walker is mostly self taught, and credits his success to instructional works by Michael Jackson and Charlie Papazian, going to the local homebrewing shops and partnering with mentors. His 23 years of experimentation has developed into a devotion to creating great tasting brews, using a standard stable of recipes along with engineering a few others to become regulars as well. (He performed a first in pairing a custom designed brew for a couple's handfasting wedding!)
