April
'April' is an experimental multi-media theater piece that fluidly merges a few discrete artistic media: opera, musical theater, straight play, and film. In its original conception, it was the simple story of a woman, a singer, who gradually succumbs to deafness, and her few very close but toxic relationships that disintegrate in the wake of this life-altering change. But over the course of its three-year (and ongoing) development it has ascended into a more abstract exploration of the larger themes inherent to the story, such as loss, the nature of interpersonal dependence, and a person's ability (or lack thereof) to transcend their situation.
This concert is a collection of certain fragmented, unordered sections of the piece that occur in flashes amid an abstract connective tissue of music, sound and film, sewing the fragments together so that they have the quality of a dream: one thing melts into another, certain details are oddly proportioned, and anything that seems concrete is in fact transient, and once again sinks calmly back into the fathomless, silent ocean of the unconscious.
A World Premiere Composed by Franky Rousseau and Dominic Mekky, with a libretto by Samuel Bronowski
