Call and Response: August Edition
Call and Response is a new contemporary music series that explores the process of writing and performing music. Emerging composers will have a piece premiered and engage in conversation with the musicians performing the work, as well as the audience, about the composition's conception, execution, and how it may evolve. By taking conversations about performance practice, notational systems, interpretation and creativity out of the practice room and putting them on stage, audiences can pick the brains of composers and performers and gain new insight into the creative process.
The fourth installment of Call and Response features two challenging pieces. Pauses & Puddles by Jillian Bloom (a past Call and Response performer) is a poetic exploration of modern cello technique and notation. It is a series of miniatures for solo cellist that asks the performer to order the sections, improvise, and maybe even sing. Justin Ward Weber's Waves is a wind quintet that often finds its players performing solo, exploring virtuosic lines, and contrasted with high-wire feats of coordination.
