Late Summer Fruit Tree Pruning and Care with fruit tree experts John Valenzuela and John Heenan
Late summer is the best time to prune to avoid diseases, to train young trees, to maintain and control rampant growth of middle aged trees and to renew stunted and overgrown older trees. Join John Valenzuela and John Heenan for a primer on summer pruning and care of your backyard orchard. Following a discussion of tree biology, identification and solutions for pest and disease, and tool selection and maintenance, we'll head out to the Pollinate Farm & Garden orchard for a demonstration of pruning techniques for aesthetics and optimal fruit production. For those who feel ready, participants will get some hands-on pruning experience with guidance by our experts.
Instructor Bios: John Valenzuela is a horticulturist, consultant, and educator specializing in fruit trees and food forests, working throughout the Bay Area. He is past chairperson for the Golden Gate Chapter of the California Rare Fruit Growers and owner of Cornucopia Food Forest Gardens. John Heenan is a backyard rare citrus grower who volunteers at the Indian Valley College Organic Farm and Garden fruit tree nursery and orchard in Marin County.
