Dr. Quast and Mr. Skinner's Christmas Dinner
With the holiday season coming in fast and rainy to Vancouver, the events calendar is heating up as the city prepares for another slew of Christmas themed entertainment. The menu is abundant for many tastes this year, whether you're an avid Arts Club goer, or a Matthew Good fan. But if you're looking for something new, something tantalizing, something risqué, let your feet wander further afield down to 350 Powell Street and discover the hole in the wall that is Spectral Theatre. Come to "a Christmas show for distinguished degenerates, upper class outcasts, well-bred black sheep and the only the finest of freaks" (David Quast writer and Artistic Director)
Not many people know of the gems hidden a few blocks east from the mecca of local boutiques and tucked away tattoo parlours that litter historic Gastown, and like many buildings in the neighborhood, Spectral is quite none descript upon first glance with its red front and blacked out windows. What makes this place special is the magic that occurs inside, and magic it is. Can you imagine going to a theatre where car chases and tango martial arts battles are a regular occurrence? Where doors constantly open to multiple universes of Russian spies and debauched musical epics? Do you wish to be swept away by stories of bone chilling yet hilarious horror while sipping drinks and swapping legends with the local bartender? "And all in a forty seat black box theatre" you say? Rest assured you've found the right place.
This year's holiday treat offered up by Spectral is as off the beaten path as the studio itself. Dr. Quast And Mr. Skinner's Christmas Dinner: A Civilized Yuletide for Civilized Folk, is the tale of two dear friends and well- meaning cannibals facing the trials and tribulations that we all face during the traditional family Christmas get together. The show promises to be a rollicking time presented as a classic radio play complete with live sound engineered effects. Written by one of Spectral's Artistic Directors David Quast, (who has written a whole series of radio plays starring the "civilized" flesh eating duo), the play is a perfect sampling of what Spectral Theatre has to offer.
As a whole the company seeks to breathe new life into the rotting corpse of live theatre by thrilling audiences with fantastic stories delivered in unpredictable and innovative ways. They are known for their love of spectacle and offer a strikingly unusual experience of what live theatre can be. The company's catch phrase is "Theatre for people who don't like theatre"! If you constantly find yourself looking for something new in the theatre scene here in Vancouver, or are just looking for a break from the warm fuzzies of Christmas, Spectral is a refreshing staple to delight your inner child.or horrify your grandmother.
