Waiting for Tina Meyer
"Waiting for Tina Meyer" at The Robin Theatre in Lansing's REO Town
Reading of Rediscovered Play by Kristine Thatcher and Larry Shue, One Night Only
"Waiting for Tina Meyer," a romantic comedy by Kristine Thatcher and Larry Shue, comes to the stage for one night only at Lansing's newest theater venueThe Robin Theatre, 1105 S. Washington in REO Townon Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 7:00 p.m.
The reading will feature area favorites John Lepard and Emily Sutton-Smith of the Williamston Theatre, Andy Callis of the Performing Arts Department at Lansing Community College, and Chicago actors Michael Joseph Mitchell and Barbara Simpson Fuhrman. Thatcher will direct.
Shue is best known for his often-performed farces, "The Nerd" and "The Foreigner," winner of two 1985 Obie awards. Shue's promising career as an actor and playwright was cut short when he was killed at age 39 in a 1985 commuter plane crash.
Thatcher is an award-winning playwright, director and actor, who got her start at Lansing's BoarsHead Theater. She and Shue met while working together at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater. It was Shue who encouraged Thatcher to write her first play, "Niedecker," about Wisconsin poet Lorine Niedecker. Later, the two collaborated on the "Tina Meyer" script; when Shue died suddenly, Thatcher set the script aside and didn't look at it for years.
Greg Vinkler, artistic director of Wisconsin's Peninsula Players, encouraged Thatcher to revive the unpublished script. "It's not exactly the same as uncovering a lost Shakespeare play," said Vinkler, "but an unknown Shue play well, that's pretty close!"
"Waiting for Tina Meyer" is about two actors on tour with a musical about King Richard the Third. Bob, a widower, gets a note backstage from one Tina Meyer, inviting him to join her for a drink after the show. Bob asks his confident, debonair co-star Walter along for moral support. As they wait for Tina, they strike up a conversation with the piano player, the bartender, and the bar's only other patron. Their conversation changes more than just their outlook on romance.
Tickets are $35; proceeds benefit the Kristine Thatcher Fund, established to support Kristine's recovery from ovarian cancer.
For tickets, call 1-800-838-3006 or visit www.ktfund.org. Seating is general admission and limited to 100 people. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. A reception will follow the reading.
The reading of "Waiting for Tina Meyer" is sponsored by the Kristine Thatcher Fund steering committee, in partnership with the Renegade Theatre Festival.
