Khecari's Orders from the Horse was recently awarded Links Hall's Midwest Nexus Touring Award and was one of six US dance projects to be shortlisted for The Kevin Spacey Foundation's Artist of Choice Award. Work in progress showings are scheduled in Chicago, Portland, Minneapolis and San Francisco with a culminating performance of the completed work in summer 2016.
Orders from the Horse is a study in the relationship between surrender and improvisation in dance performance. The movement arises from the practice of a low-brain, non-cortical awareness, like arising in the middle of the night and negotiating dark hallways with a grey cognizance that won't fully awaken one. Like skiing, choices are made reflexively, with the ease and excitement of gravity's pull. Performers negotiate a landscape pocked with dips, rises, and eddies; falling in, through, or past each other's wake as they move. In the music and movement, cyclic rhythms are multiple and overlapping, faster and slower, coexisting like tonics and harmonics, presenting the phenomenon of Emergence, where dyssynchronous patterns find brief and repeated moments of conjunction.
This work in progress performance features dance performance by Khecari Artistic Directors Julia Rae Antonick and Jonathan Meyer, sound by Joe St.Charles, and lighting by Rachel Levy and Jonathan Meyer. Since 2007, Antonick and Meyer have engaged a highly kinetic duet collaboration that has yielded image-intensive, environmentally rich theatrical worlds. Working with found objects, abandoned instruments, and loop pedals, percussionist Joe St.Charles has been a long-stranding collaborator. With Orders from the Horse, the three are moving in a new direction, working towards presenting an experience like wandering the wilderness, where the eventless tableaus or subtle shifts of wind are as engaging as the drama of wild creatures crashing in upon the human world.
Orders from the Horse is an evening-length in-process work created and presented by Khecari.
