We open our 80th anniversary season with festive music by three masters, all born in the auspicious year of 1685. This exuberant music displays the full talent and prowess of these youthful composers (none then older than 36), as they combine Italian, German, and English styles. And here's a chance to hear two rarely performed works along side an old favorite!
Being in a birthday mood, we present Handel's undeservedly neglected Ode. Even if England's Queen Anne never actually heard the celebratory present Handel wrote for the woman "who fix'd a lasting peace on earth," (with the Treaty of Utrecht), she nevertheless left him a lifetime pension.
Domenico Scarlatti's exquisite and rarely-performed Magnificat is a gem of sacred polyphony. Though he is known primarily for his keyboard works, this superb Renaissance-inspired work alone earns Scarlatti a place in the choral pantheon.
Bach's jaunty and joyful Orchestral Suite No. 1 features lively baroque dances for oboes and strings, and showcases some of the finest Baroque players in the country.
