Palestinian Film Festival: Jenin Jenin
Banned in Isreal, Jenin Jenin includes testimony from Jenin residents after the Israeli army's Defensive Wall operation. The city and camp were the scenes of fierce fighting which ended with Jenin flattened and scores of Palestinians dead. Palestinians as well as numerous human rights groups accused Israel of committing war crimes in the attack. The United Nations appointed a commission of inquiry, but Israel refused to let its members visit the scene.
Attending the film to provide context and facilitate discussion will be Jim Matlack. Having served as Director of the Washington, D.C. office of the American Friends Service Committee, the leading Quaker agency for refugee, relief, peace, and social justice program, Matlack has been engaged with Israeli/Palestinian issues for four decades. He has journeyed there seven times, mostly recently in June of this year including a visit to Jenin.
Presented by Maine Voices for Palestinian Rights, this is Portland's first Palestinian Film Festival, and along with great films, there will be Palestinian pottery, olive oil, art calendars, and other Fair Trade goods for sale. A chance to do some early holiday shopping. SPACE and MVPR members get a 15% discount on goods. All net proceeds from the festival will go to the Middle East Children's Alliance project to bring clean and safe drinking water to the children of Gaza
