Second Sunday Concert Series Presents: Cafe Palermo: Julia Lockhart, bassoon and Daniel Bolshoy, guitar, September 13
On September 13th, bassoonist Julia Lockhart and guitarist Daniel Bolshoy spice up the parlour with a program entitled Cafe Palermo. September's concert features a colourful selection of musical gems from Spain, Portugal, Argentina and much more; all adapted for the rare and lyrical combination of bassoon and guitar.
ABOUT JULIA LOCKHART: A native of Calgary, Julia Lockhart has been a member of the VSO bassoon section since 2002, and became Principal Bassoon in 2005. She is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in bassoon and a Diploma in harpsichord. Her Master of Music was completed through studies at Yale School of Music and the University of British Columbia. Julia has studied with renowned bassoonists Bernard Garfield, Nadina Mackie Jackson, Jesse Read, Frank Morelli and Michael Hope.
As a teacher, Julia serves on the faculty of the University of British Columbia and the VSO School of Music. She has given guest master classes at several other Canadian universities. A dedicated chamber musician, Julia is a founding member of the Harlequin Bassoon Quartet. She has done numerous arrangements for bassoon with piano, with classical guitar, and for bassoon quartet. In her spare time, Julia also enjoys creating mosaic art and working as an apprentice woodwind repair technician, having repaired hundreds of student instruments in the Vancouver area.
ABOUT DANIEL BOLSHOY: Daniel Bolshoy is committed to bringing the guitar to the attention of audiences everywhere. He is regularly praised for his friendly and informative spoken introductions, and progressive programming of solo and chamber music. His concert tours take him from prestigious international concert stages to remote villages and house-concerts. Mr. Bolshoy has performed as a soloist with many orchestras internationally and across Canada, including: the Mexico City Philharmonic, Israel Chamber Orchestra, Volgograd Symphony Orchestra (Russia), Beer Sheva Symphony (Israel), New Mexico Symphony (United States), Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Toronto Philharmonia, Edmonton Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic, Manitoba Chamber Orchestra and many more. Daniel Bolshoy appears on seven commercial CD recordings: Resonance, España (Boldan Music). McGillicuddy's Rant (Centaur Classics), and as guest artist on Soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian's Tango Notturno (CBC Records) Tenor Marc Hervieux's A Napoli (ATMA) and with Pinchas Zukerman and members of the NAC in a special CD to benefit the homelessness in Vancouver. His most recent solo CD Soñando Caminos (ATMA) is devoted to the works of Spanish composer Eduardo Sainz de la Maza.
Mr. Bolshoy has recently been appointed to the position of guitar instructor at the University of British Columbia School of Music he is also the head of the guitar department at the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra School of Music.
