In 1985 TWEED TheaterWorks, then called TWEED Ensemble, presented the first incarnation of Manhattan Diary; it was titled Diary of A New York Lady, and was adapted from the short stories of Dorothy Parker by Stephen Pell. Performed at LIMBO Lounge in the East Village, the play was directed by Kevin Malony, and featured Pell, Malony, Colleen O'Neill and Richard Spore, with production design by Russ Clower. The play was further developed at a summer residency in New Hope at Solebury School in the summer of '85, and later became Manhattan Diary, directed by Michael Nee, playing on New York's 42nd St Theater Row.
Writers Block reaffirms Howl! Arts and Howl! Happening's commitment to showcasing the vision of contemporary writers, performers, and artists. The festival also serves to support Howl! HELP's mission to provide emergency financial assistance and social service support to artists who have participated in the annual HOWL! Festival or who made/make their careers in New York's East Village and Lower East Side arts communities. 100% of the proceeds from ticket sales benefit the Actors Fund.
