Comedy Returns to El Rio! (Mon, Dec 12)
Kung Pao Kosher Comedy Presents... Comedy Returns to El Rio!
Comedian/comedy producer, Lisa Geduldig, began her stand up comedy career 22 years ago at El Rio in San Francisco's Mission District. In commemoration of her 20th year in comedy, two and a half years ago she launched a monthly comedy night, Comedy Returns to El Rio! the second Monday of the month at the club that first put her onstage.
Please note that producer/host, Lisa Geduldig, will not be in attendance this month, AND the show will be on hiatus in January, February, and March and resume on April 9, 2012.
The Monday, Dec 12th show features: Karen Ripley, Sammy K. Obeid, Aundre the Wonderwoman, Dolores Trevino, and Nick Leonard.
KAREN RIPLEY, queer comic and improv master, has been featured on LOGO TV's "Wisecracks." Her comedy comes from her life experiences, from the "bluest lesbian jokes" to the most thought provoking political insights. Her laid back style will relax and then surprise with a one liner that will cause your head to fly back and your mouth will open. Intense sounds of laughter will rise up from your diaphragm and you will be loaded with endorphins. Effects have been known to last for days. And when you repeat Karen's jokes to your friends the effects start all over again. She began her comedy career in 1977 (34 years ago!) in the heyday of the GLBT comedy movement in San Francisco and now appears regularly at clubs, colleges, cruises, and festivals around the country.
SAMMY K. OBEID, born in Oakland, graduated from UC Berkeley with a 3.9 GPA. double major in Applied Mathematics and Business...to become a comedian. A professional, nationally-touring comedian at 27, Sammy's style has been described as "refreshingly intelligent," "hopeful and inspiring," and "a youthful perspective that reaches all ages." Recently placing in the top 3 of the San Francisco International Comedy Competition amongst veteran comedians of 15 years or more, Sammy's 4 years in comedy have proven explosive. He is also the first comedian to ever appear on the Food Network telling jokes. Currently he has not missed a day of performing since Christmas 2010. He is going for 365 days straight. The Dec 12th show will be day 352.
AUNDRE THE WONDERWOMAN set her sights on political humor from the beginning. She uses the stage as her bully pulpit taking on everything from presidential politics to animal lovers. She took first place at the 1999 Russian River Resort Comedy Competition, was a semi-finalist in the 2005 SF Comedy Competition, and is the recipient of the 2008 Stand Up For Justice Award from Death Penalty Focus for her legal work against the death penalty.
DOLORES TREVINO, a San Francisco native, has been performing stand up comedy for over 20 years. She's so well loved she has a park, a mission and a street named after her! She has appeared at clubs, cafes, and venues all over the Bay Area. As a cast member of the improv group Metropolis, Dolores honed her comic acting skills creating a gang of unforgettable characters that she brings to the stage. She currently is the "unofficial lesbian mayor" of Oakland and spends her time "living la vida loca" on the streets of Oakland.
NICK LEONARD (guest host) started performing stand up at the beloved Josie's Cabaret in The Castro and has appeared all over the U.S. His comedy graced the prestigious 2004 Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. That same year, he was also voted one of San Francisco's top 10 comics by Karma.com. The former Cosmonaut and International Bon Vivant is the producer of the monthly gay comedy showcase, QComedy at Martuni's.
Must be over 21 as it's a bar. Tickets on sale on a sliding scale basis - $7 to $20.
