Food Symbols in 17th Century European Art
In 17th century Europe, food spoke to people when they viewed art. Grapes, lemons, apples, ducks, wine, eggs ... they all helped tell a story. Andree Caldwell is an art historian who specializes in 17th century art of Rome and Venice and knows quite a bit about Dutch and French art as well. She'll guide us through the galleries and talk about the importance of food symbols in the art of the period.
The tour will begin promptly at 2; please arrive at 1:45. We'll meet to the left of the round desk in the main lobby. The museum is open until 9 pm on Saturdays, so you can stay as long as you like after the program. (The program fee includes museum entrance but not food.)
