A Matter of Worth by Marcia E. Cole
Live Garra Theatre brings the voice of Hannah, a 73 year-old slave to life as part of the Nation's Capital, Women's Voices Theater Festival. The world premiere of A Matter of Worth by Marcia E. Cole, starring Judy Leak as Hannah, captures the soul and memory of all those who labored unsung and were sold as property along with the livestock.
A play seen from the eyes of Hannah; her sharp mother-wit proves she's worth much more than what's being sold on auction day. In 1855, Hannah lived enslaved in Baltimore County on the estate of Caleb D. Goodwin at the time of his demise. She was listed as property right along with the oats, corn, and potatoes in the fields. Hannah's voice is finally heard, a priceless life-lesson told by a woman whose listed worth is $1.00... Bid 'em in, bid 'em in.
