Slow Sip: Coffee tasting and presentation
With Slow Food South Bay's commitment to educate, celebrate and advocate, we present to you a:
"Slow Sip: Coffee Tasting and Presentation" by Dave Thompson, EPIC Coffee
Sunday morning, August 23, 2015, 10 - 12pm
For so many of us, coffee is one of the first things on our mind every single day.
Sip your morning brew knowing that it is grown sustainability, and that all people involved are treated well - financially and safely.
Take this opportunity to see and hear the behind-the-scenes story, from a local passionately-sustainable roaster: Dave Thompson, owner/founder of EPIC Coffee.
Our morning together will start off with coffee tasting (with a muffin to nibble on) and then Dave will share a slide show presentation of photos and graphics to bring us into the world of coffee.
Coffee tasting: Join us to sample coffees from around the world and learn about the flavor nuances that come from not only the "terroir" --the environmental influence from the geography, climate, altitude, soil-- but also the growing, harvesting, and roasting practices. Dave will lead us through tastings of several coffee beans that he gets direct from growers in Guatemala and around the world.
Presentation: Dave's slide show presentation will give us an overview of coffee's path from grower to cup. He is savvy about the growing practices, the business of importing, fair trade, direct trade and other aspects that revolve around coffee because he has spent quite a bit of time in Guatemala being his wife is from there.
He saw the challenges faced by both small-share farmers and the pickers working on larger estates. Epic Coffee was born out of his love for coffee and a deep commitment to people and our planet. He decided to work directly with coffee growers who have ethical practices, protecting the environment and paying workers fair wages, often two to three times higher than Fair Trade prices!
