Merrimans' Playhouse Jazz Performance Series presents Tia Imani Hanna Project
Tia Imani Hanna, jazz violinist/vocalist/composer, w/ Elden Kelly, guitar/strings, and Carolyn Koebel, world percussion. Native Detroiter Tia Imani Hanna is a musician who
takes listeners from one deep, swelling moment to the next, rarely pausing between chords without inhaling a fresh breath of passion into the river of her work. Ms. Hanna says her mission is "to create music that makes the listener remember they are spiritual beings and that spirit moves within us through sound, through vision, through dance with joy and love." Most recently returned to Michigan from Brooklyn, New York, where she spent the last decade working with notable musicians such as Miles Griffith, Cecil Bridgewater, Larry Willis, Eddie Locke, Richard Wyands and many others. Hanna has developed this ensemble to play music that is truly in the moment pure improvisation in the styles of many cultures and whatever the spirit hears in collaboration with great musicians.

Elden Kelly, guitarist, singer, and songwriter, entrances audiences with a style composed of diverse elements that speak about something fresh, relevant, urgent and new in today's world. His interest in international styles led him to the oud (a fretless Egyptian lute) and the glissentar (a 12-stringed fretless guitar) instruments which he now incorporates into many of his performances. In addition to instrumental improvisation, Elden also works as a singersongwriter, whose musical style blends jazz and neo-classicism with Middle-Eastern influences and American roots music.

Carolyn has been exploring rhythm and vibration for the past thirty years. Her early studies are rooted in the Western traditions, while the past eighteen years have found her slowly traversing the globe in search of indigenous music and traditional rhythmic materials from Latin and South America, West Africa and the Middle East, and all points in-between. The result is a compelling recombination in a musical palette that compliments a variety of styles and genres.
