Dirty Martini & the New Burlesque Film and Live Show!
The Jigglewatts Burlesque Revue presents the Austin premiere screening of the award-winning film, Dirty Martini & the New Burlesque, followed by live burlesque performances on Friday, November 18 with two showings at 8:00PM and 10:30PM at the 29th Street Ballroom at Spider House.
DIRTY MARTINI AND THE NEW BURLESQUE, an independent documentary film by Gary Beeber, explores the outrageous world of the performers who created the "new burlesque" scene in New York City. Get to know Miss Dirty Martini and her friends Julie Atlas Muz, World-Famous *BOB*, Bambi the Mermaid, Tigger!, Scotty the Blue Bunny, and many other cult stars. Immediately following the screening, see the "new burlesque" brought to life before your very eyes by Austin's own Jigglewatts Burlesque Revue, featuring beloved local stars, Queertini Time!
The film's seductiveness comes from its sexy acts as well as its dark exploration of the performers' struggle to pay their bills, quest for stable love relationships and inability to envision the future after burlesque. The relationship between sex work, burlesque and feminism are discussed.
As a classically trained dancer, Dirty Martini has struggled since childhood to overcome criticism of her size. Like Bette Midler, she began her career as part of the downtown drag scene where she was accepted for her talent. She went on to develop her act in the East Village drag clubs where the gay community appreciated her glamour and kitsch. Dirty Martini redefines female beauty and allows other women, of all shapes and sizes, to feel uninhibited in expressing their sensuality. The "new burlesque," is much more than just vintage nudie cuties brought to life. It is performance art, modern dance, and political satire. It is the new punk rock.
The Jigglewatts Burlesque produced their first show in June of 2006. Now going stronger than ever in their sixth year, this exclusive boutique troupe features classically trained dancers, vocalists and actors whose brand of burlesque is upbeat, cheeky, clever, elegant and sexy all at the same time, inviting audiences of both men and women to join in the fun.
With twelve titles collectively, including Hot Rods & Heels "Troupe of the Year," Texas Burlesque Fest "Audience Choice Award" and "Best Costume," this small but resplendent troupe is the most highly acclaimed in Texas.
