"Awesome" the Band + Chef Erin Brindley
Breaking a nearly 4-year performance hiatus, art-pop band "Awesome" will reunite for a two night stand in the Chef/Artist series at Nordo's Culinarium. Join the fellows as they embark on a late summer's night-long trip through the uncharted waters of brand new music, original video collage, and absurdist whimsy. They are also likely to dust off a favorite old tune or two if the wind is right and the lamps are properly lit. "Awesome" is paired with Cafe Nordo's own Erin Brindley, who will fortify the proceedings with fantastical bites from the gorgeous galley below decks. Craft cocktails, beautiful wines, and cold suds will be plentiful at the copper-top bar.
"Awesome" is a band/art collective featuring Evan Mosher, David Nixon, Kirk Anderson, Basil Harris, Rob Witmer, John Ackermann and John Osebold. The band has produced many evening-length works: Delaware (2005, Re-Bar), noSIGNAL (2006, On the Boards, toured to Oregon and Montana), Here's What Happened (2007, Seattle Children's Theatre & toured to Portland for TBA Fest at PICA), The "Awesome" Cycle (2008, four new shows in four weeks at ACT/Central Heating Lab), and West (2010, commissioned by On the Boards, toured to Theatre JUNCTION in Calgary).
In addition to their work in theatre, "Awesome" has shared rock bills with bands such as Harvey Danger, The Long Winters, Elf Power, and Presidents of the United States of America, and they once played the Sasquatch main stage at the Gorge Amphitheater. They also created the score for David Russo's Sundance hit, The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle, and also performed two conceptual symphonies by Jose Bold: <symphony> and Nighttime Forest Fire. The Stranger commissioned them to write and perform songs for literary events with authors Jonathan Safran Foer, Neal Pollack, Charles D'Ambrosio, and Miranda July. Most recently "Awesome" played songs and exchanged quips on KUOW's Weekday with Katy Sewall, Steve Scher, and their special guest Stephen Tobolowsky. "Awesome" have released seven albums, all of which are available to stream or buy at http://www.awesomeinquotes.com.
"If the seven members of "Awesome" got stuck in an elevator with a kitchen timer, a hubcap, and the lint in their pockets, they would probably be able to write a symphony in 15 minutes20, tops. And it would be wonderful. They are savantly good at setting out catchy, sad, insane little ditties, or dirges, or arena-rock balladsreally, whatever you want (did someone say polka?)and putting them onstage, dressed in hilarious premise, delivered with you-can-laugh-if-you-want-to straightness, narrated by displaced voices and aided, in the storytelling, by gorgeous films, or actors in costume, or disappearing geometric patterns of electric tape on the floor. The best music-theater hybrid since Ween didn't collaborate with Bertolt Brecht." CHRISTOPHER FRIZZELLE, the Stranger
"To borrow from Bill Graham: "Awesome" aren't the best at what they do...they're the only ones that do what they do. It is hard to say exactly what it is that they do, but I can tell you that in their music, there are traces of Paul McCartney, Frank Zappa, and They Might Be Giants. To see them is to be completely awed by what masters and visionaries they are."-- BRIAN J. BARR, Seattle Weekly
"It must be said: these guys are totally nerd-hot. There's a big, bold word for this kind of funand you know just what it is." BRANGIEN DAVIS, Seattle Times
