Jamie Laval in Tehachapi
Internationally-acclaimed Celtic violinist/fiddler Jamie Laval presents a fun-filled musical evening tracing the immigration of the Scots-Irish to Appalachia, interspersing toe-tapping melodies with amusing stories which highlight the historical and cultural ties throughout the Celtic diaspora.
Winner of the U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Championship (2002), Laval renders the ancient Celtic art form with stunning virtuosity and contemporary flair that resonates with families, youth, seniors, and devotees of ethnic, jazz, and classical music. "One of the hottest fiddlers out there" (Asheville Citizen-Times), Laval appeared on the NBC Today Show, collaborated on Dave Mathews' album "Some Devil," and performed for Her Majesty the Queen. His three solo albums air regularly on NPR's "Thistle and Shamrock" and "Folk Scene.
The concert coincides with the recent release of his latest album Murmurs and Drones. "A spellbinder from the opening notes to the last." (San Jose Mercury News)
Initially Laval studied classical violin at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Later he pursued careers as a professional symphony musician, recording studio artist, improvising violinist, and contra dance fiddler. But his passion for the haunting sounds of rural Irish and Scottish folk music eventually usurped all other preoccupations, and he has devoted himself exclusively to Celtic music ever since. He currently resides in Asheville, North Carolina and serves on the faculty of The Swannanoa Gathering, the celebrated summer institute for traditional arts and music.
