Dr. Inder M. Verma Professor, Laboratory of Genetics, Salk Institute, American Cancer Society Professor
"Cancer: King of All Maladies" In his presentation Dr. Inder Verma will talk about glioblastoma multiforme and the incredible versatility and deception that a cancer cell uses to survive and spread mercilessly.
Genetic or epigenetic events leading to mutations or alterations of genes can either lead to gain of function (oncogenes) or loss of function (tumor suppressor genes) to cause cancer. In some simplistic way the problem of cancer is disarmingly simplestop the function of uncontrolled oncogenes and replenish the gene product of a deficient tumor suppressor gene.
One of the world's leading authorities on the development of viruses for gene therapy vectors, Dr. Verma uses genetically engineered viruses to insert new genes into cells that can then be returned to the body, where they produce the essential protein whose absence causes disease.
Biography Dr. Inder Verma is a professor in the Laboratory of Genetics at the Salk Institute and an American Cancer Society Professor of Molecular Biology. He was born in India, received a master's degree from Lucknow University, and a Ph.D. from The Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovoth, Israel. After postdoctoral study at MIT in the laboratory of the Nobel Laureate David Baltimore, he joined the faculty of The Salk Institute.
For his many outstanding accomplishments, Dr. Verma was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and as a Foreign Fellow to the National Academy of Sciences, India. He was also elected to the Third World Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society.
