Alexander Payne Retrospective - Both screenings
In anticipation of Alexander Payne's new film "The Descendants", the Phoenix Film Society will be screening two of his award-winning films.

November 8th at 7pm, "About Schmidt"

Kicking of the Alexander Payne retrospective on November 8th is "About Schmidt" starring Jack Nicholson and Kathy Bates. Nicholson and Bates were both nominated for Oscars for their roles in this film.

Synopsis:

Warren Schmidt (Nicholson) is about to taste a not so sweet slice of life. When he retired, he and his wife Helen had big plans, but an unexpected twist changed everything. Now, all of Schmidt's attention is focused his daughter's upcoming wedding to a loser waterbed salesman. From meeting hippie parents to sponsoring a Tanzanian foster child, Schmidt embarks on a search for answers...and discovers that life is full of trick questions.

November 10th at 7pm, "Sideways"

Next up on November 10th is "Sideways" starring Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church and Virginia Madsen. This film was nominated five Oscars and also a win for Alexander Payne for Best Screenplay. It was the first film ever screened for the Phoenix Film Society. There will be a discussion hosted by Chris LaMont following this film.

Synopsis:

In this intoxicating, intelligent comedy, director Alexander Payne (Election, About Schmidt) serves up "one of the best movies of the year" (Entertainment Weekly) about the ups, downs and sideways journeys of life. A wine-tasting road trip through California's famed Central Coast takes an unexpected detour as Miles (Paul Giamatti) and Jack (Thomas Haden Church) hit the gas en route to their mid-life crisis. The comically mismatched pair soon find themselves drowning in wine, women... and laughter!

Both films will be screened at Harkins Scottsdale 101.

Ticket prices for one film are $8 or get both for $10
