FAREWELL POETRY :: MATTHEW COLLINGS :: HIVA OA :: OPUL
Ten Tracks and Sleepsound Agency present FareWell Poetry.
FareWell Poetry is a collective of Parisian musicians and an Anglo-saxon poet and filmmaker.
From indie to modern classical to drone and shoegaze, spoken word and experimental film, FareWell Poetry represents the pooled influences of its core members and passionate collaborators.
The band's richly arranged songs seek out subtle and luminous climaxes, the hypnotically simple melodies falling away like scaffolding to reveal a complex structure narrated by a haunted voice drumming out a dark poetry, echoes from a deep well.
Performing in festivals, movie theaters, concert halls, churches and collaborating with a wide range of guests such as Bérangère Maximin, Gaspar Claus, David Moore, David Fenech, this ambitious project combines incandescent and powerful drama, orchestrated minimalism, experimental film, dark sensuality and luminous poetry.
Somewhere between a sleep-starved Man Ray, the visual performances of Throbbing Gristle or the Velvet Underground, FareWell Poetry exudes a creativity inspired by a state of trance and seeks new boundaries to push back, new doors to open.
'By constantly rethinking and repopulating the landscape of our songs, we attempt to avoid the limitations of a set format, dressing and undressing initial structures, hoping for the invisible to ignite.'
The support bill for the evening features Matthew Collings who is joined by two of Edinburgh's most atmospheric new groups Hiva Oa and Opul.
MATTHEW COLLINGS
Tiny delicate moments of intimacy and all-consuming noise; the music of composer and sound artist Matthew Collings is textural, melodic and often sonically overwhelming. Spanning the divide between classic minimalism and avant-garde guitar music, Collings has already found considerable praise from the international community for his previous releases under the curious moniker Sketches for Albinos, releasing a series of records in the USA (Ropeadope) and Japan (Nothings66 records).
Currently based in Edinburgh, he is establishing a reputation as a live performer, notably with his piece 'Flags of a Dead Ship', for Multiple Electric Guitars, Prepared Amplifier, Room Acoustics and Laptop, expanding on the experience of putting together multiple guitar ensembles. His debut full-length album, 'Splintered Instruments', produced by Bedroom Community's Ben Frost, and recorded at Reykjavik's famed Greenhouse Studios, will be released in 2012. PRESS FOR MATTHEW
"...he works his magic; tuning and manipulating the sound and folding it back on itself to fill the air around him with glacially mangificent sonic sculpture. There are two or three such pieces in his set; each building like some submerged orchestra. Ambient but definitely not background, when he draws it to a close it's like being snapped out of hypnosis. Amazing stuff." MANCHESTER MUSIC "Like a fine piece of literature, That City is a Liar should be shared and passed onto as many people as possible. Its sheer warmth and beauty will move anyone who has ever had a flicker of emotion." HECKLERSPRAY "...on a par with anything that the mighty Sigur Rós have released" RAWKSTAR
